Many people consider stamp collecting as a rewarding personal hobby. This hobby of stamp collecting started in 1860's with teenager collectors. They collect because of fun and enjoyment; however, stamp collecting goes with a cost.  Stamps can be very valuable so one needs to have a basic knowledge on how to appraise the value of his stamps. This may be done well by reading stamp catalogs and asking help with expert stamp collectors.  Additionally, one may go online and check the prices or contact local stamp dealers.

One may also determine the price of a postage stamp by his own. There are a number of factors that needs to be considered when personally appraising postage stamps. This includes the stamps’ place of origin. It is important to know which country the stamp was produced. All countries have their names in their stamps except Great Britain and all stamps show a face value in the issuing country’s currency. Some countries have issued stamps with a letter of the alphabet or designation such as “first class” for a face value. For non – English speaking countries, their names are printed in their original languages.

Another important factor that needs to be considered in determining stamp prices is the stamps’ condition. Knowing how to eye-ball stamp’s grade and condition will save both time and money and will help a collector build a better collection.

Additionally, prices could be based on whether the stamp is used or unused. To most collectors, the ideal collections are the stamps that were not used yet for mail. Usually, used stamps cost less than unused or mint stamps. However, if used stamps have unique or interesting cancellation dates, they tend to cost more than their mint counterparts.

Age of the stamp is another crucial factor in determining postage stamp prices. Usually, newer stamps have higher postage stamp prices.

Lastly is the availability of the stamp. Special edition stamps or stamps that are issued for a restricted span of time tend to be more valuable than those that were issued as a general all-purpose stamp of a common denomination.

With all the factors stated above, it can be observed that determining price postage stamps is not as easy as it sounds. However, with a good stamp guide and an observant collector’s eye, an enthusiastic stamp collector can determine postage stamp prices without difficulty in no time.
